Question - Hi there
My name is Alison and my dad was a barber in London England for over 50 years. He died a couple of years ago, and I have now inherited some 1000 plus shaving mugs... primarily European but also some from the USA. I am not particularly interested in making a profit from selling them, and would be really happy to donate them ( or some of them to a museum/ collector who is not going to sell them for profit either. Any ideas?

Question - here is a picture of the Lady's mug I purchased. I cannot include the picture of the front, but it is hand painted with flowers. I have never found a mug with a divider down the middle. What do I have here?
View Picture
Answer - You appear to have a home use mug. One pocket is less deep than the other. The shallow pocket would hold soap, and the deep pocket would hold hot water. The person shaving would dip their brush in the hot waer and then rub the brush over the soap to create lather for brushing onto the face for shaving. What little I can make out of the handle; this mug may be a faily recent reproduction. There are normally several examples on ebay at any one time. On ebay are some mugs that I was able to quickly spot: #150450230935, #220617435222, #190403145464.

Question - I purchased a couple of mugs that were labeled "Lady's Shaving mugs. They have a divider down the middel of the mugs. Is or was there such a thing as a Lady's Shaving mug? I put a picture on the question I asked Zephr about this. any info would be appreciated.
Answer - Hi,

I don't know of a definitive rule for Ladies Shaving Mugs, but I have a couple that beleive to be in that category. The ones that I have are short ( 2 inches tall )with a fancy handle and a pretty floral decal on the side. They also have the soap pocket with drain holes, and the water reservoir. Mine are unmarked on the base, but are certainly porcelain. I would think that most ladies mugs would not be personalized, and would have intricate floral decorations plus the soap and water compartments. Many chamber sets included shaving mugs, but they would not have been exclusively for women.

I hope this helps,

Question - hi..

i have a rare shaving mug which i would estiamte to be from the 1890's give or take...i have owned it for 35 years...unfortunately, i do not use a scanner or digital camera, but i will try to describe it.

first,it appears to be about standard size but not standard shape.

it is roughly 5 inches tall and comprised of six panels, each hand painted. the two panels closest (on either side) to the handle are essentially painted a dark brown with faint images of flowers...the remaining four panels depict a background scene taht COULD be a desert with a white sky or other ill-defined locale (possibly Hawaii ?) with a few trees that kind of look like palms...in one scene i can make out a man and a woman...she is dressed in a ballerina costume or similar garb....in the foreground on two of the panels are well-defined reclining swans with wings spread; one in a nesting position, the other more traditional....the colors are rther striking...dark brown and white are dominanat but reds, greens and oranges are featured...

the shape of the mug is such that the upper and lower portions flare out beyond the panels, and the top is of an irregular ridge shape while the bottom section is composed of two scalloped halves per panel...

the top of the mug and the handle are gilded....

the piece is signed underneath. seems to be signed "E. Havens...Los Angeles, Calif..."

sadly, there is a hairline crack that runs from top nearly to the bottom, but visually the effect of the crack is not overwhelming....

my guess is that the piece is one of a kind, and yet ?

it is truly a beautiful piece...wondering about its history and value....

any thoughts ?

thank you.

Answer - Robert,

The mug sounds attractive, and was most likely produced in the early 1900s. Many decorative mugs were produced for home use, and have unique scenes. The material is probably fine china and hand painted. The crack has a great affect on the value. I would guess that the mug would realize less than $20 at auction.

Question - Hi, Do I have to be a member to ask a couple questions? I have a T&V France occupational shaving mug I'm interested in both identifying and valuing. I've looked at hundreds of these online and the one I have is unlike any I've seen. Can't be sure what the occupation is. I'll send a pic. Would it depict a brick bridge builder? Or a location? The scene wraps around the entire mug with a building on the left and trees on the right.
I've only done a marginal cleaning of it so far and would like to know if there are any special precautions I should take in a more thorough cleaning. There is some paint loss and two tiny, but very smooth chips around the lip. I have more photos and could take more yet of chips, etc., if there is any interest on your end. Any idea of value? You can reach me at taproot@iowatelecom.net or bbamabo@gmail.com. If you're REALLY interested, you can reach me at 319-668-1728. Thanks so much, Barbara

Answer - Barbara,

The one picture is not enough to make a determination. The large scene is not typical, but isn't enough to provide a value. I need to know the size of the mug ( height & diameter ), details of the damage, and any markings on the base. Bridge builder cooupational mugs are not uncommon, but less common than many.

Thanks for contacting NSMCA.

Question - Hi, again,
When I sent the questions about the brick bridge occupational mug, I hadn't digested the small print on your page yet. I envisioned my email going just to you. If my questions are posted on your site, please remove my phone number and the taproot email address before posting. The gmail address is fine to include. Thanks very much, Barbara

Question - How do you remove rust from straight razors?
Answer - There is no good way without possibly hurting the value of the razor. If the rust must be removed, glass bead blasting will remove the rust. The glass beads penetrate into the rusted areas and removes the rust completely. The result is a satin finish that can be polished on a buffer. Glass blasting does not pit the surface like blasting with sand. However, pits from the rust will still be visible. Small nicks on the blade can be removed by honing with a 3000 water hone.

Question - I have an inherited collection of mugs (250) that I'm interested in selling - any advice? I'm in California
Answer - Hi,

Depending on the quality of the mugs ( chips, cracks, or repairs ); you have a number of options. I sell mugs on ebay for myself and others, but the damaged mugs rarely sell for more than a few dollars. I would need to see what you have before getting into much detail.

Cowan out of Cincinnatti does a fine job of promoting and selling the high end mugs. Yoder of Wisc. just sold a group of about 50 higher end mugs, and he has sold several collections so that he knows what to emphasize. Glassworks auctions of Pa. also is a company that I recommend.

Having said that; I would be interested in talking to you about doing something through ebay. I think that the auction houses get a pretty hefty fee.

I can be reached at gharris6467@sbcglobal.net or 618 467-0515
